Gynecomastia in men – male breast reduction
Breast formation in men (also called gynecomastia or male breasts) is not unusual. If you feel uncomfortable with your male breasts, it is good to know that breast reduction is also possible for men and is often performed.
First, Dr Schiettecatte investigates the reason for your breast formation. For most men, excess breast development is caused by obesity, but hormones, illness and the use of medications and other products can also play a role. If obesity is the reason for your breast formation and you are planning to lose weight, you should do this before surgery. Due to weight loss, your breast size can change, and your breasts can sag. This can be corrected during the operation.
Prior to the procedure, Dr Schiettecatte thoroughly discusses your wishes and the possibilities with you. Request a consultation now. After the consultation, you will receive a tailor-made quotation.
The consultation and a quotation
Dr Schiettecatte is your treating plastic surgeon in Clinic Veldhoven and CosMed Clinic in Bos en Duin. Prior to the procedure, you have a personal intake interview with Dr Schiettecatte to discuss your wishes and the options. Here you discuss together the desired changes and the course of the operation. On the day of the consultation, you also bring along photos of what you like. Dr Schiettecatte will gladly discuss the possibilities with you. Contact us to schedule your no-obligation consultation. After the consultation, you will receive a tailor-made quotation.
The treatment of gynecomastia is done in different ways and depends on the degree of breast formation. If you have limited breast formation and elastic skin, then liposuction or liposculpture is the best solution. The excess fatty tissue is sucked away through a small incision under the nipple. If your breasts are further developed, the excess skin is also removed and more incisions are needed. A very fine thread is used to close the wound, to minimize scarring.
After the operation
Immediately after the operation, you will get a pressure bandage that you have to wear for a week, to limit swelling. Usually, small tubes (drains) are placed during surgery to drain the wound fluid from the wound. The drains are usually removed one day after the operation. After about two weeks, the stitches are removed by Dr Schiettecatte now.
Risks and complications in the treatment of gynecomastia
As with any surgery, complications can also arise in the treatment of gynecomastia. There may be bruising, the breast may have an irregular shape, and the scar may harden. However, this is rare. Before you decide to have the procedure performed, Dr Schiettecatte extensively discusses all possible risks with you and what you can do yourself to limit them.
